The people of Boone County are being called upon to provide volunteer service to the community in support of homeland security. Opportunities exist to assist emergency first responders and disaster relief organizations. The Boone County Citizen Corps has been established to raise public awareness about emergency preparedness and recruit volunteers willing to make the community better prepared for emergencies and disasters.

The Citizen Corps was established by President Bush in the wake of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, as a part of his USA Freedom Corps initiative encouraging citizens to provide volunteer service. A Citizen Corps Council was established to organize the efforts of the Boone County Citizen Corps. The Boone County Citizen Corps Council consists of representatives from the City of Florence, Boone County Fiscal Court, Boone County Junior Chamber of Commerce (Jaycees), City of Florence Police Department, Boone County Emergency Management, Boone County Sheriff, Boone County Fire Chief's Association, American Red Cross, Salvation Army, St. Luke Hospitals, Toyota, and a representative of the general public.

Two primary goals have been established by the Boone County Citizen Corps Council: 1) to encourage citizens to take an active role in community emergency preparedness through volunteer service; and 2) to educate the public on emergency preparedness and how to protect themselves in the event of a crisis.

Volunteers in Police Service

Medical Reserve Corps

   Citizen Corps in Boone County provides a wide range of opportunities for people to make a difference in volunteer service to their community.
